About Time in Nevada

A Border Drawn for Convenience, Not Geography

Nearly all of Nevada runs on Pacific Time, matching California and the rest of the West Coast. The one well known exception is West Wendover, a small city pressed right up against the Utah line.

Until 1999, West Wendover was officially on Pacific Time along with the rest of the state, even though its twin city just across the border, Wendover, Utah, ran an hour ahead on Mountain Time. The two towns share roads, schools, and a casino district built specifically to attract visitors from Salt Lake City, so a constant one hour mismatch created real friction for daily business. In October 1999 the federal Department of Transportation moved West Wendover into Mountain Time, closing that gap for good.

A handful of other Nevada towns near the Idaho border, including Jackpot, Owyhee, Mountain City, and Jarbidge, still keep Mountain Time informally, following the business hours of their closest neighbors rather than the state's official Pacific designation. None of them have ever filed for a formal change, so on paper they remain in the Pacific zone to this day.

Who Actually Gets to Move a Time Zone Line

No state can redraw its own time zone boundary. Under the Uniform Time Act of 1966, that authority belongs to the federal Department of Transportation, not to Nevada, Utah, or any other state government.

West Wendover's switch followed that exact process. The DOT reviewed a formal petition, held hearings, and issued a rule change placing the city in Mountain Time, citing reduced commercial confusion as the justification. It was not a local decision or a quiet local custom, it was a federal rulemaking with its own paper trail in the Federal Register.

Because that authority sits in Washington rather than Carson City, informal cases like Jackpot or Mountain City stay unofficial indefinitely unless someone files the same kind of petition, which nobody has done since 1999.

A Time Zone Boundary That Ignores the State Line

Most of the country's internal time zone boundaries roughly track state lines or county lines. West Wendover is a rare case where the boundary was drawn to cut through a single state instead.

The 1999 change did not move the entire Nevada side of the border, only a tiny 7.5 square mile pocket around West Wendover itself. Everywhere else along the Nevada and Utah line, the Pacific and Mountain boundary still runs straight down the state border as expected.

The result is a small, deliberate notch cut into the time zone map, a boundary that answers to commerce and daily commuting patterns rather than to any natural or administrative line.
