Nowruz is the Persian New Year, celebrated by more than 300 million people across Iran, Afghanistan, Central Asia, the Caucasus, and Kurdish communities, and it begins at the exact astronomical instant of the March equinox rather than on a fixed date on any calendar grid. That single detail sets it apart from nearly every other major New Year tradition on Earth. Where Ramadan drifts roughly 11 days earlier each year on the pure lunar cycle, and Diwali and Hanukkah shift within a set window because their calendars patch lunar months onto a solar year, Nowruz is anchored to one precise, calculable second: the moment the sun crosses the celestial equator heading north. Families in Tehran, Kabul, and Los Angeles gather around a table and wait for that instant by the clock, not by a page turning on a calendar.

The Exact Moment, Not a Date on a Grid

An equinox is not a day. It is a specific point in time, the moment Earth’s axial tilt puts the sun directly over the equator, and because that instant is fixed in Coordinated Universal Time while local clocks are not, the calendar date it lands on can shift depending on where a person is standing. In 2026, the equinox falls at 14:46 UTC on March 20, a mid-afternoon instant that keeps the local date at March 20 in nearly every time zone on Earth. In other years the same astronomical event lands close enough to UTC midnight that it genuinely crosses into a different calendar date across the Americas while it’s already the next day further east, which is why the holiday is sometimes reported as falling on March 19, 20, or 21 depending on the year and the source, and none of those reports are wrong. They are describing the same category of instant filtered through different time zones. Even the equinox’s own definition carries a small asterisk: the term means “equal night,” yet day and night aren’t actually equal length on the equinox itself. Atmospheric refraction bends sunlight enough, and the sun’s visible disk is wide enough, that most locations see seven to fifteen extra minutes of daylight beyond the clean 12-hour split the astronomy would otherwise predict.

The United Nations sidestepped this complexity entirely when it created International Nowruz Day in 2010: the resolution simply names March 21 as the date, a fixed diplomatic shorthand for an event that doesn’t actually happen on a fixed date. Families observing the holiday at home ignore that shorthand and wait for the real moment instead, the same way a household tracking Easter is really following a lunar and solar calculation rather than a static day on the wall calendar.

The Calendar Built Entirely Around This One Moment

Iran’s official calendar, the Solar Hijri calendar, does not calculate its new year the way the Gregorian calendar calculates leap years. Where the Gregorian system runs on a fixed mathematical rule, an extra day every four years with exceptions for century years, the Solar Hijri calendar simply observes the equinox directly each year at the meridian of Iran Standard Time, roughly 250 miles east of Tehran, and starts the year at the midnight closest to that moment. There is no formula deciding in advance whether a given year will run 365 or 366 days. Astronomers determine it after calculating exactly when the sun crosses the equator.

That accuracy traces back to the 11th century, when the poet and mathematician Omar Khayyam worked with a team of astronomers under the Seljuk sultan to design what became known as the Jalali calendar, a direct ancestor of the modern Solar Hijri system, at a time when European calendars were still centuries away from the sort of correction that eventually produced the Gregorian reform. The modern version has been Iran’s official civil calendar only since 1925, but the underlying method, watching the sky rather than counting on a fixed rule, is nearly a thousand years old.

Older Than the Empire It’s Usually Credited To

Popular accounts often trace Nowruz straight to the Achaemenid kings and the ceremonial city of Persepolis, pointing to stone reliefs of tribute-bearers as evidence of an ancient new year festival held there under Darius I and his successors. Current scholarship is considerably less certain about that connection. The word itself does not appear in any surviving Achaemenid inscription, and while the Greek writer Xenophon described a spring gathering at the Persian court that resembles a Nowruz celebration, historians still debate whether the Persepolis reliefs actually depict that festival or a different, unrelated ceremony read backward through a much later lens. The first text to name the holiday directly, calling it “nog roz,” dates from the Sasanian era, centuries after the Achaemenids had fallen, when Zoroastrianism was the Persian state religion. The underlying idea, marking the sun’s rebirth at the equinox, is almost certainly older still, but the specific chain connecting it to Persepolis is thinner than the popular version suggests.

Why Nowruz Doesn’t Drift the Way Ramadan and Diwali Do

Most of the world’s major moveable holidays move because they are tracking the moon, not the sun. Ramadan follows a purely lunar calendar with no leap months at all, so it slides roughly 11 days earlier against the Gregorian year with each cycle, eventually rotating through every season over about 33 years, the same underlying mechanic behind Ramadan’s yearly shift.

Diwali and Hanukkah use lunisolar calendars instead, which periodically insert an extra month to keep the lunar calendar roughly synchronized with the solar year, so their dates wander within a set window rather than drifting endlessly, a pattern shared by Diwali and by the Hebrew calendar behind Hanukkah alike. Nowruz belongs to neither category. It is a purely solar event with no lunar component to correct for, which is exactly why it never leaves the same narrow three-day window near March 20 in any given millennium.

The same holiday is called Nowruz in Iran, Novruz in Azerbaijan, Nooruz in Kyrgyzstan, Nauryz in Kazakhstan, and Newroz among Kurdish communities, and how long people actually get off work varies just as widely. According to testimony submitted to the Oregon state legislature in 2025 in support of a bill recognizing the day locally, Iran observes 13 official days around the festival, Azerbaijan gives five, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan four each, and Turkmenistan two. Afghanistan, Georgia, Kosovo, Albania, and the Kurdish region of Iraq all mark it as an official holiday as well, and communities in the wider Persian diaspora, from Los Angeles to Toronto to London, hold public celebrations even where it isn’t a government holiday at all.

The Kurdish Newroz Tells a Completely Different Story

Nowruz proper isn’t the only fire ritual on the Persian calendar that week. On the eve of the last Wednesday of the outgoing year, Iranians observe Chaharshanbe Suri, a separate festival of ancient Zoroastrian association where people jump over small bonfires chanting a line that roughly translates to “my sickly yellow for your healthy red,” symbolically trading the old year’s ailments for the fire’s vitality. It functions as a send-off for the year rather than a welcome for the new one, distinct from both the equinox moment itself and from the fire tradition that defines Kurdish Newroz just a few days later.

While Iranian Nowruz traditions center on renewal, cleaning, and the haft-sin table of seven symbolic items, Kurdish communities mark the same date with a founding myth of their own. In the Kurdish version, a blacksmith named Kawa leads an uprising against a tyrant king named Zahhak, who kept two serpents growing from his shoulders alive by feeding them the brains of local children. Kawa climbs a mountain after defeating the tyrant and lights a signal fire to announce freedom to the surrounding villages, which is why bonfires and fire-jumping remain the central ritual of Kurdish Newroz in a way they aren’t for the Iranian holiday of the same origin. The Persian poet Ferdowsi recorded a version of the same tyrant-and-blacksmith story in the Shahnameh around 1010 CE, though in his telling Kawa serves a different royal line entirely. Historians note that Kurdish intellectuals explicitly connected the Kawa legend to Kurdish national identity in the early 20th century, turning a shared regional myth into a specifically Kurdish symbol of resistance, a reframing that helps explain why the holiday has at times been restricted in parts of the region even as it remains freely celebrated elsewhere.

From a Royal Court to a United Nations Resolution

UNESCO added Nowruz to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009, following a joint nomination from twelve countries including Iran, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, India, Iraq, and several Central Asian states. The United Nations General Assembly followed in February 2010, adopting resolution A/RES/64/253 to formally establish March 21 as International Nowruz Day, a largely symbolic date given that the holiday’s actual astronomical moment moves around within that same narrow window depending on the year. The resolution’s own preamble puts the number of people who observe the holiday at more than 300 million, spread across a region stretching from the Balkans and the Black Sea basin through the Caucasus and Central Asia to the Middle East.

The Festival Doesn’t Actually End Until Day Thirteen

Nowruz is often described as a single day, but the traditional celebration runs a full thirteen days, ending with a custom called Sizdah Bedar. On that final day, families take the sabzeh, the small dish of wheat or lentil sprouts grown specifically for the Haft-Seen table in the weeks leading up to the new year, and throw it into running water, typically a river or stream, rather than keeping it at home. The sprouts are believed to have absorbed whatever misfortune the household would otherwise have carried into the coming year, and discarding them outdoors, usually during a picnic away from the house, is meant to send that bad luck away with the current rather than storing it indoors. The number thirteen is considered unlucky enough on its own in the tradition that spending the day outside the home is thought to ward off its effects entirely, which is why Sizdah Bedar functions less as a farewell party and more as a final, deliberate act of clearing the slate before ordinary time resumes.
