Julian vs Gregorian Calendar: Why Some Churches Still Use the Old One

The disagreement between the Julian and Gregorian calendars is not, and never really was, a dispute about math. Nobody in the Orthodox Church contests that the Gregorian calendar tracks the solar year more precisely; the arithmetic isn’t in question. What kept millions of Christians on a calendar that drifts further from the seasons every century is a decision made at a church council in 325 CE about how to calculate a single holiday, and the way that decision has echoed, unresolved, for the seventeen centuries since.

A Reform With a Rocky Start

Julius Caesar introduced the calendar that bears his name in 46 BCE, working with the Alexandrian astronomer Sosigenes to replace a Roman calendar so badly out of step with the seasons that officials had taken to inserting extra months whenever it suited them politically. To reset it, Caesar let 46 BCE run 445 days, a stretch still remembered as the Year of Confusion, then introduced a clean 365-day year with a leap day every fourth year. Even that clean start went wrong almost immediately: the priests responsible for tracking leap years miscounted, adding one every three years instead of four, and the calendar wasn’t running correctly until Augustus quietly suspended leap years for a stretch to let it catch up around 8 CE.

An Error Too Small to Notice, Until It Wasn’t

The deeper problem had nothing to do with counting mistakes. Sosigenes had set the year at exactly 365.25 days, overestimating the true solar year by about 11 minutes. Eleven minutes a year sounds negligible, and for a while it was, but the error compounds: one full day of drift accumulates roughly every 128 years. By the mid-1500s, that drift had pulled the calendar 10 days out of step with the seasons, and the spring equinox, fixed at March 21 by the First Council of Nicaea in 325 CE specifically because it anchors the calculation of Easter, had crept back to around March 11 on the calendar page while the actual astronomical equinox stayed put.

Gregory XIII’s Fix

Pope Gregory XIII addressed both problems at once in 1582. First, the ten accumulated days were simply deleted: Thursday, October 4, 1582, was followed the next morning by Friday, October 15. Second, the leap year rule itself was refined so the error couldn’t rebuild: century years would no longer be leap years by default, only when evenly divisible by 400, which is why 1700, 1800, and 1900 passed without a February 29 while 1600 and 2000 kept theirs. That refined system became the Gregorian calendar most of the world still runs on today, and it brought the average year to within about 27 seconds of the true solar year, a level of accuracy the Julian system never came close to.

A Reform Nobody Adopted at the Same Time

Catholic Europe moved fast. Italy, Spain, Portugal, and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth switched before 1582 was even over. Protestant Europe treated the whole thing with open suspicion, a reform issued by papal bull looking less like astronomy and more like Rome asserting authority, and resistance held for generations. Britain and its American colonies didn’t convert until 1752, by which point the accumulated gap had grown to 11 days, so the British Parliament simply mandated that September 2 be followed directly by September 14.

Sweden managed the messiest transition of all. Rather than drop 10 or 11 days at once, Swedish authorities tried to ease into the Gregorian calendar gradually starting in 1700, by skipping leap years for 40 years until the gap closed on its own. They dropped February 29 in 1700 as planned, then bureaucratic error let 1704 and 1708 keep their leap days anyway, leaving Sweden synchronized with neither the Julian nor the Gregorian calendar. To escape the mess, Sweden reverted to the Julian calendar outright in 1712, adding two extra days back into that February to make the correction, which is how February 30, 1712, became a real date on a real calendar. Sweden didn’t finish the job properly until 1753, jumping 11 days at once, the same way Britain had the year before.

Sweden’s February 30 wasn’t even the only one in history. The Soviet Union produced a second, unrelated instance in 1930 and 1931, under an entirely different experimental calendar that briefly replaced the seven-day week with five-day cycles and standardized every working month at 30 days.

Orthodoxy’s Real Objection Was Never About the Math

By the time Gregory XIII’s reform reached Orthodox Christianity, the calendar question had already fused with something the church considered non-negotiable. The First Council of Nicaea hadn’t just fixed a date for the equinox; it had settled, as a matter of doctrinal unity across the whole church, exactly how the date of Pascha, or Easter, should be calculated, tying it to the Julian reckoning of the spring full moon. Ancient canon law added a hard constraint on top of that: Pascha could never fall on, or before, Passover. Switching to the Gregorian method of calculating Easter risked violating that rule outright in certain years. Rather than take that risk, Orthodox churches kept the old Paschal calculation frozen in place while the rest of the calendar question stayed unresolved for another three centuries.

The 1923 Compromise That Split Orthodoxy in Two

A congress of Orthodox churches meeting in Constantinople in May 1923 finally proposed a middle path: the Revised Julian calendar, designed by the Serbian astronomer Milutin Milanković. It synchronized immediately with the Gregorian calendar by dropping 13 accumulated days, and it introduced its own leap year rule, subtly different from Gregory’s, that turned out to be even more precise. The Revised Julian calendar averages 365.242222 days a year, fractionally closer to the true solar year of 365.242190 days than the Gregorian calendar’s 365.2425, and the two systems won’t actually diverge from each other until the year 2800.

The congress’s proposal split the Orthodox world rather than uniting it. Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, Greece, Cyprus, Romania, Poland, and eventually Bulgaria in 1963 adopted the Revised Julian calendar for fixed feast days like Christmas, becoming what’s generally called the New Calendarists. Jerusalem, Russia, Serbia, and Georgia rejected it outright and kept the full traditional Julian calendar, becoming the Old Calendarists, alongside breakaway Old Calendarist communities that split from churches which had adopted the reform. Ethiopia’s own church calendar sits outside this split entirely, running on a distinct Alexandrian-derived system rather than either version of the Julian debate playing out among Byzantine-rite churches.

What the 1923 reform didn’t touch is the detail that matters most: even the New Calendarist churches kept calculating Easter using the old Julian-based method. Moving Christmas onto the Revised Julian calendar was one decision; recalculating Pascha was a different one entirely, and essentially no Orthodox church has made that second move. That’s why Orthodox and Western Christmas can now fall on different calendar dates depending on which church you’re asking, while Orthodox and Western Easter remain out of sync almost everywhere, every year, regardless of which calendar a given church uses for everything else.

The Gap Keeps Growing

Today, the gap between the Julian and Gregorian calendars stands at 13 days, which is why Orthodox Christmas lands on January 7 in Gregorian terms for churches that never adopted the 1923 reform: December 25 on their own calendar simply arrives 13 days later than December 25 on everyone else’s. That gap isn’t fixed. It will widen to 14 days in 2100, when the Gregorian calendar skips a leap year that the plain Julian calendar keeps, the same century-year rule that Gregory XIII introduced in 1582 quietly doing its job more than five centuries later.

Small Stories the Split Left Behind

The calendar divide shows up in oddly specific ways at the parish level. Greek immigrants in Worcester, Massachusetts, wanting their own feast day to line up with their new neighbors’ Christmas, named their parish after Saint Spyridon specifically because his feast day on the Julian calendar happened to fall on December 25 by the Gregorian reckoning their American neighbors used. On Mount Athos, the autonomous monastic community in Greece, the Julian calendar isn’t reserved for religious dates at all; it governs ordinary daily life on the mountain, even though Greece itself has run on the Gregorian calendar civilly since 1923.

Two Calendars, One Unfinished Argument

Every part of this split traces back to the same root: a calendar reform that solved a genuine astronomical problem in 1582, aimed at a church that had, centuries earlier, decided some calculations mattered more than calendar accuracy. The Gregorian system won almost everywhere it was purely a civil question. Wherever it ran into a liturgical calculation locked in place since 325 CE, it’s still, four hundred years later, waiting for an answer.
