Field research by Marco Bassi found that specialists could maintain correspondence between lunar months and the seasonal year through a complex observational method rather than through a simple written table.

The Namoratunga interpretation, however, should not be treated as settled fact. Later researchers questioned whether the stone alignments could be linked as directly to the modern Borana system as the original 1978 study proposed. Laurance Doyle reinterpreted aspects of the calendar in 1986, and Clive Ruggles later emphasized problems with projecting a living calendrical system backward onto a prehistoric monument.

That disagreement is what makes Namoratunga useful for understanding time rather than merely for producing a dramatic claim about an ancient observatory. Archaeology can preserve stones and approximate dates, while ethnography can document how a living calendar operates. The difficult part is proving that the two belong to the same historical system across more than two millennia.

The secure conclusion is therefore narrower but still important: northern Kenya contains a prehistoric stone complex whose astronomical interpretation stimulated major research into Indigenous East African methods of reckoning lunar and stellar time. The more ambitious claim, that the pillars directly encode the ancestral Borana calendar, remains debated rather than proven.

Every Tea Sale in Mombasa Begins Three Weeks Before the Auction Hammer Falls
