In Utqiagvik, Alaska, the sun set on November 18 and will not appear again until January 22. That’s 65 days straight with no sunrise at all. Five months later, the same town gets the opposite deal: about 84 days where the sun never dips below the horizon, even at midnight. Neither is a myth or a tourist exaggeration. Both are the direct, predictable result of how far north the town happens to sit, and the same math plays out in reverse at the bottom of the planet.

Why the Sun Refuses to Set (or Rise)

Earth’s axis is tilted about 23.4 degrees relative to its orbital plane. At the poles themselves, the sun rises and sets exactly once per year, right at the equinoxes. Staff at the South Pole station get a single sunrise in September and a single sunset in March, with nothing in between but one uninterrupted stretch of light and one of dark.

The Asymmetry Nobody Expects

Atmospheric refraction bends sunlight around the curve of the Earth, which means the sun becomes visible slightly before it has geometrically risen and stays visible slightly after it has geometrically set. That bending makes polar day measurably longer than polar night, and it pushes the effective boundary of “midnight sun” territory a little further from the pole than the boundary of “polar night” territory.
