On 18 November 1929, the Sea Became Part of the Earthquake
At 20:32 UTC on 18 November 1929, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck beneath the Atlantic south of Newfoundland and Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon. In the archipelago, where civil time was then four hours behind Greenwich, the main shock occurred at about 16:32 local time.
The earthquake was strong enough to be felt on Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, but the most dangerous process developed below the ocean rather than beneath the islands themselves. The shaking triggered a massive submarine landslide on the continental slope. That displacement generated a tsunami that spread across the surrounding Atlantic coasts.
Modern geological work treats the event as the largest historical earthquake recorded in eastern Canada and one of the most important Atlantic tsunami events of the twentieth century. The discarded wooden cases did not simply become waste. On an island where imported building material and fuel were valuable, timber from alcohol crates was reused in construction or burned. Physical traces of the thirteen-year boom therefore remained after the legal opportunity disappeared.
Time was central to the trade because the profitable window had a clear beginning and end. The commercial expansion was created by legislation that came into effect in 1920 and collapsed when prohibition ended in 1933.
