Following Alberta's Lead in 2026

On April 20, 2026, Premier R.J. Simpson announced that the Northwest Territories would end seasonal clock changes and adopt a permanent, year round time standard, matching the decision Alberta had made just days earlier.

The move was not a spontaneous decision. Simpson had said publicly beforehand that the territory would only make the switch once Alberta did, since the two jurisdictions already share the same Mountain time zone and keeping them aligned made the most practical sense for cross border business, travel, and daily coordination between the two governments.

A 2022 public engagement survey in the NWT had already shown that a majority of residents supported ending the twice yearly change, though opinion was split on whether the territory should settle permanently on standard time or daylight time. With Alberta choosing permanent daylight time, the Northwest Territories followed the same path rather than run its own separate consultation from scratch.

When the Territory Spanned Three Time Zones

Today's Northwest Territories sits entirely within a single Mountain time zone, but that was not always true. Before 1999, the Northwest Territories was one enormous, undivided territory that stretched across three separate time zones at once, Eastern, Central, and Mountain, reflecting how spread out its communities were across the Canadian Arctic.

When the eastern portion split away to form the new territory of Nunavut in 1999, its government tried something ambitious, collapsing all three inherited time zones into a single Central time zone to simplify communication between far flung communities. The experiment did not go smoothly. Iqaluit, Nunavut's capital sitting at the far eastern edge, initially refused to give up Eastern time, and the new territory ended up changing its time zone rules four separate times within just 17 months before finally giving up and reverting to the original three zone system.

The remaining, western portion of the old territory, what is now the modern Northwest Territories, avoided that entire saga simply by being geographically compact enough to settle on one time zone without a fight.

A Clock That Runs Far Ahead of the Sun

Inuvik, one of the largest communities in the western Arctic, sits at roughly 133.7 degrees west longitude, well past the 105th meridian that Mountain Time is measured against. That gap of close to 29 degrees means solar noon in Inuvik falls a couple of hours later than the number on the clock would suggest.

That gap barely registers next to a bigger swing in daylight itself. Inuvik's longest day of the year runs to nearly 23 hours and 40 minutes of sunlight, while its shortest day shrinks to under 40 minutes, a difference of almost 23 full hours between the two extremes of the year.

That scale of natural variation is exactly why the debate over seasonal clock changes carried less weight in the NWT than elsewhere. Shifting the clock by a single hour changes very little when the sun itself is already adding or stripping away several minutes of daylight every single day.
