Saint John and the Push for Standard Time

New Brunswick played a small but documented role in one of the biggest shifts in how the world tracks time. In the early 1880s, the Board of Trade in Saint John petitioned the federal government to adopt Standard Time in public offices, a petition preserved today in the records of the Privy Council Office at Library and Archives Canada.

The timing was not a coincidence. That same period was when engineer Sandford Fleming, chief engineer of the Intercolonial Railway that ran straight through New Brunswick, was campaigning internationally for the idea of dividing the world into standard time zones, an idea that led directly to the International Meridian Conference of 1884.

Saint John's merchants had a practical reason to care. A railway running on inconsistent local times up and down the coast made schedules unreliable, and a city built on shipping and trade had every incentive to push Ottawa toward a fixed, predictable clock.

The Year New Brunswick Skipped Summer Clocks

Between 1945 and 2020, there was exactly one year when New Brunswick did not observe Daylight Saving Time at all: 1973.

The cause was not political but physical. The province had just been hit by major flooding, and provincial authorities decided the usual spring clock change was not worth the disruption on top of an already difficult year. Every neighboring Atlantic province, including Nova Scotia and Newfoundland, went ahead with the clock change as normal that year, leaving New Brunswick alone on a fixed, unchanging Atlantic Standard Time for the full twelve months.

The following year, 1974, New Brunswick rejoined the rest of Atlantic Canada on the usual schedule, and it has not skipped a year since.

A Time Zone File of Its Own

Most of Atlantic Canada is grouped under a single time zone identifier, but computer systems track New Brunswick separately, under the identifier America/Moncton, created specifically because of the province's own history with clock changes.
