India runs on a single clock from the Arabian Sea to the Myanmar border, a stretch of roughly 3,000 kilometers, and that clock sits at a UTC offset almost nobody outside the region can round off in their head. UTC+5:30 isn’t a rough approximation or a political compromise picked by committee. It’s the exact result of a specific meridian, chosen more than a century ago, that still governs how a country of 1.4 billion people tells time today.
The Meridian That Decided It
In 1905, Viceroy Lord Curzon designated 82°30′ East, the line of longitude passing through Mirzapur, near Allahabad in what is now Uttar Pradesh, as the reference meridian for a unified Indian Standard Time. The rule came into force on January 1, 1906. A clock tower still stands at the old Allahabad Observatory marking that exact line, even though the country’s official atomic clocks have long since moved to the National Physical Laboratory in New Delhi.
Before One Clock, There Were Three
Standardization didn’t happen all at once. Until the early 20th century, British India’s major cities kept their own local solar time, each expressed as its own offset from Greenwich.

Railways forced the issue. Running trains across a subcontinent where every city set its own clock by the sun made timetables nearly unworkable, and that operational pressure is what eventually pushed British India toward a single reference meridian. Even after 1906, the transition dragged on for decades: Calcutta didn’t fully drop its own local time until 1948, and Bombay held onto its version until 1955.
Why Not a Round Number
Most of the world’s time zones sit on whole-hour offsets because most reference meridians fall roughly 15 degrees apart, the distance Earth rotates in exactly one hour. India’s reference meridian, 82.5 degrees East, doesn’t line up with that pattern. Time zone offsets are calculated by dividing a location’s longitude by 15, and 82.5 divided by 15 comes out to exactly 5.5, not a whole number.
That 82.5-degree line wasn’t chosen for its tidiness. It sits close to the geographic center of India’s longitudinal span, putting it in the same category as a handful of other half-hour time zones around the world.
One Country, Two Hours of Sunlight Difference
India stretches from Sir Creek in Gujarat, at roughly 68°7′ East, to the Kibithu outpost in Arunachal Pradesh, at roughly 97°25′ East. That’s close to 29 degrees of longitude, nearly two full hours of solar time from one edge of the country to the other, all forced onto a single civil clock. In practice, that means the sun can rise before 5 AM in India’s northeastern states while it’s still dark in Gujarat, and set well before 5 PM in the same northeastern region during winter.
Assam’s Unofficial Second Time Zone
That gap didn’t disappear quietly. Tea estates in Assam have informally followed what’s known as “Chaibagaan time,” or tea garden time, set one hour ahead of IST, a practice with roots going back to British colonial tea planters who wanted pickers working during actual daylight rather than official clock time. In January 2014, then-Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi went further and ordered the entire state to shift its clocks to that unofficial hour, effectively creating a second Indian time zone by fiat. The central government never adopted the change nationally, citing risks to railway and airline coordination, and studies estimating the region loses billions of units of electricity annually to the mismatch haven’t been enough to move the federal position. A 2006 recommendation from India’s own Planning Commission to formally split the country into two time zones met the same fate: acknowledged, studied, and ultimately shelved.
The War Years Exception
India has technically used something like daylight saving time exactly three times, and never for energy policy. During the Sino-Indian War of 1962 and the Indo-Pakistani wars of 1965 and 1971, clocks were adjusted as a wartime measure, brief departures from the otherwise unbroken single-time-zone policy the country has held since 1947. Outside those three conflicts, India has never observed seasonal clock changes at all.

The logic behind UTC+5:30 shows up elsewhere on the map, though rarely with the same reasoning twice. Nepal’s UTC+5:45 pushes the same idea a quarter-hour further, deliberately distinguishing itself from India’s offset. Iran sits at UTC+3:30 and Afghanistan at UTC+4:30, both chosen for similar geographic-centering reasons rather than political symbolism.
China took the opposite approach entirely. Despite spanning a longitude range comparable to the continental United States, China enforces a single time zone nationwide, Beijing Time, meaning the sun can rise well past 10 AM in the country’s far west. India’s half-hour compromise and China’s flat refusal to compromise at all represent the two opposite answers to the exact same geographic problem.
