About Time in Suriname
At Midnight in 1984, Paramaribo Jumped Straight to 00:30
For almost four decades, Suriname kept a half-hour standard time. The America/Paramaribo record places the country at UTC-3:30 from October 1945 until October 1984. Independence on November 25, 1975 did not alter that offset: the new republic inherited the same half-hour clock and continued using it for nearly nine more years.
The break came at the start of October 1, 1984. IANA's maintained transition record moves Paramaribo from UTC-3:30 to UTC-3 at local midnight. Because the new offset was thirty minutes farther ahead, 23:59:59 on September 30 was followed by 00:30:00 on October 1. The first thirty minutes of that date never occurred in Surinamese civil time.
This was not daylight saving. There was no corresponding autumn or spring reversal and no seasonal rule attached to the change. Suriname permanently discarded its half-hour offset. Current Surinamese government educational material places the country in time zone -3, the same offset established by the 1984 reform.
The change also ended a clock regime that separated Suriname from the whole-hour offsets now familiar across most of northeastern South America. A timestamp from September 1984 and an otherwise identical timestamp from October 1984 therefore differ by thirty minutes in their relationship to UTC even though no DST calculation is involved.
The Older Paramaribo Record Contains Changes of 12 Seconds, 16 Seconds and 10 Minutes 36 Seconds
Before the long UTC-3:30 period, Paramaribo's reconstructed clock history is considerably stranger. Current tzdb data assigns local mean time of UTC-3:40:40 until 1911, followed by a value labeled Paramaribo Mean Time at UTC-3:40:52. Numerically, that boundary moves the reconstructed clock twelve seconds backward.
At the beginning of 1935, the database changes Paramaribo Mean Time again, this time from UTC-3:40:52 to UTC-3:40:36. That is a sixteen-second advance. The source data itself attaches a question to this entry, asking whether the capital moved. That editorial note is important: the database preserves the transition, but its maintainers do not present the reason behind the sixteen-second correction as securely established.
The next reconstructed boundary is much larger. At the start of October 1945, UTC-3:40:36 gives way to UTC-3:30, an advance of 10 minutes 36 seconds. From that point the half-hour standard remained stable until the 1984 thirty-minute jump.
Those second-level pre-1945 values should not be read as proof that every clock throughout Suriname was legally maintained to the second. They are part of the historical reconstruction for Paramaribo, and the unexplained 1935 adjustment is a warning against converting database precision into historical certainty. The post-1945 half-hour regime and the 1984 move to UTC-3 are far stronger anchors for reconstructing twentieth-century Surinamese timestamps.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many time zones does Suriname have?
One. The whole of Suriname follows America/Paramaribo, so every city shows the same local time as the capital, Paramaribo.
Is Suriname ahead of or behind GMT?
Suriname is currently 3 hours behind GMT (UTC-3).
Does Suriname use summer time?
No. Suriname does not observe daylight saving time, so its clocks stay at UTC-3 all year. Its time difference with countries that do change their clocks still shifts by an hour in spring and autumn.
How many public holidays does Suriname have in 2026?
Suriname has 15 national public holidays in 2026, when banks and government offices are usually closed. Some regions may also have their own local holidays.
How do I dial a phone number in Suriname from abroad?
From a mobile phone, type +597 and then the local number without the leading 0 used for domestic calls, if it has one. From a landline, replace the plus sign with your exit code: 011 from the US and Canada, or 00 from most of Europe, for example 00 597 followed by the number.
What language is spoken in Suriname?
The main languages of Suriname are Dutch, English and Sranan Tongo.
