About Time in North Carolina

A Sundial Accurate Enough to Catch a Train

Outside the Morehead Planetarium in Chapel Hill stands one of the largest sundials in the world, roughly 36 feet in diameter with a 113 foot circumference and a shadow casting gnomon nearly 24 feet long. Built in 1956, the sundial was the work of Joe Hakan, the university's chief engineer for campus construction, working under a very specific instruction from benefactor John Motley Morehead: build something accurate enough that a person could actually rely on it to catch a train.

Hakan took the challenge seriously, spending nights locating the exact position of the North Star, since a sundial only tells correct time if its gnomon points precisely at true north, the geographic pole, rather than the more easily found magnetic north most compasses default to. Brass plaques around the dial let visitors read the correct time for their exact date of the year and compare it to the time in other cities when it is noon in Chapel Hill.

North Carolina's relationship with sundials goes back long before 1956. Colonial records describe Moravian settlers in Salem commissioning two "sun clocks" in 1772, a Rowan County resident built one into the wall of his brick house in 1811, and by 1833 a visiting professor was already writing home about the sundial he found in Professor Elisha Mitchell's Chapel Hill garden, on almost the exact spot where the giant Morehead dial stands today.

The Twelve Seconds Timed by Stopwatch

The most precisely dated moment in the history of flight happened on a cold, windy beach in North Carolina. At 10:35 in the morning on December 17, 1903, Orville Wright lifted off the sand at Kitty Hawk for 12 seconds, covering 120 feet before touching back down, the first controlled, powered flight of a heavier than air machine in human history.

The Wright brothers timed the flight themselves with a stopwatch, an artifact now preserved by the Smithsonian, and the moment was captured in a single photograph taken by John T. Daniels of the nearby Kill Devil Hills lifesaving station, a man who had never operated a camera before that morning. The brothers flew three more times that same day, alternating turns, with Wilbur's final flight of the day covering 852 feet and lasting 59 seconds, nearly five times longer than the historic first attempt just hours earlier.

Why Diwali’s Date Changes Every Year

Why Diwali's Date Changes Every Year In October 2025, Diwali split down the middle. Cities where the sun set before 5:30 p.m. lit their lamps on October 21. Everywhere else celebrated a day earlier, on October 20. Same festival, same religious significance, nearly a billion

Why April Fools’ Day Falls on April 1

Ask almost anyone why April Fools' Day exists and the answer comes back the same way: France switched calendars in the 1500s, some people kept celebrating New Year's on the old date, and everyone else mocked them for it. It's a tidy story, repeated by

What Is Lent and Why Does It Last Exactly 40 Days

Count the days on a calendar from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday and the number that comes out is 46, not 40. That's not a mistake in how most people describe the season, and it's not a modern miscount either. The gap between the number

Why the Earliest Sunset Comes Before the Winter Solstice

What Is a Supermoon and When Is the Next One

Every time a supermoon rises, the same statistic gets repeated: 14% bigger, 30% brighter. It's in almost every news segment and nearly every listicle, and it's also a comparison almost nobody in the audience will ever actually witness, because it measures the single closest possible

Why the Sky Is Blue During the Day and Black at Night

Sunlight is white. Air is, as far as anyone can tell by looking through a window, colorless. And yet every clear afternoon the same 400,000-kilometer column of gas above your head reads as a specific, saturated blue, then goes black within an hour of sunset.
