Alaska is wide enough that if you flew from its easternmost point to its westernmost point, you’d cross more longitude than a flight from New York to California, and keep going. By pure geography, a state that size should span three or four time zones. Instead, almost the entire state runs on a single clock. The reason has nothing to do with the sun and everything to do with a decision made in 1983 to make business calls easier.
The Short Answer: Alaska Time Zone
Nearly all of Alaska uses Alaska Time, officially AKST (Alaska Standard Time, UTC−9) in winter and AKDT (Alaska Daylight Time, UTC−8) in summer. That covers Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Utqiagvik, and the vast majority of the state’s population and landmass.
This puts Alaska exactly one hour behind Pacific Time year-round. If it’s noon in Seattle, it’s 11:00 AM in Anchorage, no matter the season, since both zones shift their clocks for daylight saving on the same dates.
One Exception: The Aleutian Islands
The far western Aleutian Islands, the long volcanic chain stretching out into the Pacific, don’t follow Alaska Time. Islands west of roughly 169°30′ W, including Adak and the Near Islands, use Hawaii-Aleutian Time (UTC−10 standard, UTC−9 during daylight saving).
This creates a real oddity: Hawaii shares this same zone name but never observes daylight saving, while the Aleutian portion does. So for about eight months of the year, Adak and Honolulu share a clock. For the other four, they’re an hour apart, even though neither one moved geographically.

Why a State This Big Uses Almost One Time Zone
Alaska’s easternmost edge, around the Panhandle near the Canadian border, sits close to 130°W. Its westernmost edge, Attu Island at the tip of the Aleutian chain, actually crosses the 180th meridian and lands at roughly 173°E. Measured the long way around, that’s close to 58 degrees of longitude, nearly four standard 15-degree time zone slices.
Compare that to the width of Alaska Time’s actual coverage: everything from Ketchikan in the southeast to Utqiagvik on the Arctic coast, over 2,000 kilometers of east-west distance, runs on the exact same clock. Juneau, sitting near the same longitude as Vancouver, keeps the same time as Nome, which sits almost level with the far side of the Pacific.
The 1983 Decision That Changed Everything
Before October 30, 1983, Alaska actually did have four time zones: Pacific, Yukon, Alaska-Hawaii, and Bering. Southeast Alaska ran close to Pacific Time, while the western regions ran hours behind. It matched the geography reasonably well, but it made basic business communication a mess.

Governor Bill Sheffield pushed for unification specifically to align Alaska more closely with business hours in Seattle and the rest of the Lower 48, which handled a large share of the state’s banking, shipping, and government coordination. On the day of the switch, most of the state moved onto a single Alaska Time zone, and the Aleutians were folded into what became Hawaii-Aleutian Time. Four zones became two almost overnight, and the vast majority of the population ended up on one.
What This Does to Sunrise, Sunset, and the Feel of the Day
When a zone is built around commerce instead of solar position, the clock drifts away from the sun the farther you get from the zone’s reference meridian. Alaska Time is based on the 135th meridian west. Juneau sits close to that line, so its clock time tracks the sun fairly well. But places far to the west, like Utqiagvik or Nome, sit close to 20 degrees of longitude further from that reference point.
Utqiagvik sits around 21 degrees west of the 135th meridian, which works out to roughly 84 minutes, close to an hour and a half, between clock noon and true solar noon. In practice, this means the sun in western Alaska reaches its highest point closer to 1:20 PM local clock time rather than 12:00, a gap most residents never think about because everyone around them lives on the same shifted schedule.
Layer that on top of Alaska’s extreme seasonal daylight swings, driven by its high latitude rather than its time zone, and the result is a place where clock time and lived daylight experience can feel unusually disconnected, especially in winter when the sun barely clears the horizon regardless of what the clock says.
Commerce Over Geography: Why the Trade-Off Stuck
Despite the mismatch with solar time, the unification solved the actual problem it was meant to solve. Alaska businesses, government offices, and residents dealing with the Lower 48 gained a predictable, single-hour offset from Pacific Time instead of juggling two or three different gaps depending on which part of the state they were calling. It’s the same logic behind why standard time zones were invented in the first place, coordination matters more than solar precision once a region is economically tied to somewhere else.
Alaska’s version just pushes that trade-off further than almost anywhere else in the world, because the distances involved are so much larger than a typical state or country. Alaska isn’t the only place that chose one administrative clock over strict geography, either.
Hawaii made a similar call by staying off daylight saving entirely, choosing predictability for residents and visitors over the small seasonal shift most other US states accept. What makes Alaska’s case distinct is the scale of the mismatch it accepted: a 58-degree geographic spread, four zones’ worth of natural sun position, compressed into two clocks so the state could keep pace with a business day 1,500 kilometers south in Seattle.
